Dance is an ancient form of movement that is often
spontaneous and free, very expressive and communal in
nature, aesthetic to the eye, artistic to the mind, speaking
to the heart and soul, invigorating in its kinesthetic
prowess and challenging athletic physicality. It can be
speculated that when one dances from one's innermost
authentic being one loses and finds oneself to the many
intuitive and interpretive aspects of one's soul.
Pilates is a form of contemporary exercise created less
than a century ago. Like dance it is grounded in
rudimentary movement elements progressing into more
complex integrated patterns. Small pieces of equipment
such as circles and bands are incorporated into the
practice to assist with individual capabilities in the
development of the natural physiological channels of a
healthy, dynamic, strong and free, flexible and whole,
balanced, moving, and wise body.
Tai Chi (short for tai chi chuan) is a form of Chinese
martial arts from the Neijia (soft or internal) branch. Tai
chi is often called a moving meditation because focusing
the mind on the movements of the form helps to bring
about a state of mental calm and clarity. The essence of
tai chi is thus found in the performance of slow motion
movement forms that are practiced with an internal focus
and intentional purposes of promoting health, longevity,
tranquility and peace of mind. As such in the west it is
often practiced as a form of stress reduction.
Yoga is also an ancient form of movement awareness,
intimately introspective, attentive to the power in and of
stillness that is kinetic to all life and the essence of all
movement. In stillness we find much movement. Yoga
consciousness is a dance of energy and light with the
imagination unfolding, flowing in and out of quietude, clarity,
and peace, engaging in fluctuations of movement energy
and the effulgence of dynamic awareness, being and
seeing, listening, sensing, breathing and beyond.
